Public hearings

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) agreed that its disciplinary hearings will be conducted in public from 1 January 2008.

The move to open hearings will affect all cases before Disciplinary and Appeal tribunals from 1 January 2008, subject to the tribunal’s discretion. The decision is the culmination of a thorough review and consultation with ICAEW boards, committees and external bodies.

Although the Council has given its authority for hearings to be held in public, the chairman of the tribunal will have power to exclude the media and the public from all or part of the proceedings.
